Traveling to Venice and staying in a hotel on the island can be very expensive.
Luckily, you have two options when visiting:
1. Stay on the island of Venice
2. Stay off the island in a nearby town
If you're a traveler like me who has a tight budget, your best option is to stay off the island.
Why stay off the island?
Well for one, hotels on the island do not come cheap. Even hostels have relatively high prices on the island. It is also important to keep in mind that Italy charges taxes on tourists when staying at hotels and hostels, making accommodations even more expensive.
Additionally, the city itself can be very overcrowded, and hotels book fast. Venice has always been a major tourist destination, with nearly 20 million tourists visiting the city annually.
Staying off the island will be less expensive, and there will be fewer tourists crowding the hotels.
Where can I stay off the island?
Mestre is the town right outside of Venice and is easily accessible to and from the island.
There is an abundance of hotels and hostels to choose from, and they are a lot cheaper than the ones on the island. When I visited Venice, I found a hostel (Anda Venice) for only $18 a night that had an ensuite bathroom, showers, and sinks.
How can I get from Mestre to Venice?
The Mestre train station is right in the middle of town. One-way tickets are very cheap, and you also have the option to purchase round trip tickets.
Hundreds of trains run between Venice and Mestre on a daily basis. All you have to do is purchase a ticket at one of the kiosks and find a train going in the direction of "Santa Lucia."
How long does it take to get to Venice from Mestre?
The train ride into the island is only 10 minutes long.
If you're planning a trip to Venice and want to spend less money, Mestre provides a cheap alternative while still allowing you to enjoy all that the island has to offer.
