5/16, day 7:
Once we got to Puerto Montt, we decided to take a bus to Alerce Andino National Park, where we camped out for two nights.
Unfortunately only one of the hiking trails in the park was open, probably because it is so wet here and the paths are very slippery. We hiked the one open trail to Lake Sargasso, and the lake was pretty amazing. The water was entirely still, and everything was reflected perfectly in the water.
5/17, day 9:
This morning Ben and I got to the bus station at 10:30am, ready for our bus at 11 to Punta Arenas. We did not see our bus, and it was a little stressful once 11 came and passed.
Ben went inside the bus terminal, and found out that it was actually an hour earlier than we thought: daylight savings had happened here in Chile Sunday at midnight, and for almost two days we had been running an hour ahead!
That explained why on Monday morning when we woke up at "8" am to catch a bus out of Alerce Andino back to Puerto Montt, the bus did not come for an hour and a half later... My phone is set to automatically change time, but we haven't had wifi, so it never changed times. Luckily we know now and should have the correct time for the rest of the trip.
5/18, day 8:
After a 29-hour bus ride, we arrived in Punta Arenas!
We decided to spend tonight at Hostal Patagonia, and tomorrow we are off to Puerto Natales, and then on to Torres del Paine.
We need to shop around tonight for trekking food and warmer clothes because it is freezing in this area (unfortunately it is winter here...). One advantage of it being winter is that the entrance fee to Torres Del Paine is cheaper because it is low season.
We plan on doing the entire circuit trek around Torres del Paine to see everything, and it will take about a week. Hopefully, we get good weather, as it can be very windy down there.
