8/3, Day 85:
For the past two weeks, Ben and I have been volunteering at a surf hostel in Pacasmayo, Peru. We found the hostel through Workaway, a website where it is possible to find host families in many different countries who give room and board in exchange for a few hours of work a week.
So far, I love it here in Pacasmayo; it was just the relaxing break I needed from the backpacker lifestyle, as well as a much needed financial break. The work is pretty easy, just cleaning up around the hostel, and is way worth it. The only thing we have had to spend our money on is food because our work pays for the hostel room and free surfboard rentals.
To anyone who is traveling in the future, I highly recommend trying out Workaway. It's a great way to have a financial break, meet new people, get to know a place better, and not a bad resume builder! When I travel in the future, I am definitely planning on using Workaway.
Our days here at Pacasmayo have been pretty relaxing, and have flown by. Our schedule is pretty much the same every day: wake up around 9-10, make ourselves breakfast, work, go to lunch, relax and surf at the beach, and then cook dinner.
The hostel is only two blocks from the ocean, which is really helpful for carrying the surfboards to the sea. So far I have only tried surfing three times, and I haven't been able to get up yet.
Everyone else that is surfing wears wetsuits, but to us, the ocean feels about the same temperature as lakes in Minnesota in the summer. So, we just wear our swimsuits (locals and other surfers probably think we are crazy).
There are only 11 more days that we will be spending at the surf hostel, and after we are headed up to Lima to catch our flight on the 15th. I can't believe how fast the trip has gone by, and that in less then two weeks we will be at home.
At first, I had wished the trip was shorter, but now that I'm nearing the end there is nothing I would have wanted to miss out on in the three months we have been here. Santiago, Puerto Montt, trekking in Torres del Paine Patagonia, Atacama desert, Arequipa, Ollantaytambo, the rainforest and Puerto Maldonado, trekking to Macchu Pichu, and surfing in Pacasmayo were all fantastic, and our memories and experiences I will cherish forever.
